Berong Nickel



The use of Coconut Husk Matting to stabilise slopes in the Water Management System Polishing Pond 4. A community initiative is underway to have the community produce the matting for BNC and the mining industry in general.




Runoff water from Stockpile Area at Badlisan: Berong Nickel Project. This water reports to a 5-stage water treatment system designed to treat, clean and produce a reusable resource for the community.

Pond 4: The polishing Pond: The whole system holds 42,000,000 litres of water. Note the quality of the water compared to Pond 1. The complete system will provide a sustainable opportunity for the development of the freshwater fish farming industry once the mining operations cease.




Storage Pond 5. This pond has a controlled release where water based on quality and need, is provided to the local rice producers.

The recipients of sustainable practices: The local community and agriculture. The adjacent 30ha of rice fields have controlled access to this water when they need it. Note at the bottom right of the photo is a pipe. This is the release point to the rice fields.




One of the BNC Rehabilitation Teams. 70 local people are providing world class rehabilitation services. In just 4 weeks, over 78,000 trees were planted. Of the total rehab team workforce, 50% of these are women.

The Community Potable Water System. Each family in Berong has access to 10 gallons per day of demineralised water. Waterborne disease has dropped by 65% since its commissioning.
